Maine is a state in New England, north-eastern state. Population is 1.27 million people. The capital is Augusta's, the largest city is Portland. Original inhabitants of the territory of the state were people speaking Algonquin. The first European settlement in Maine was founded in 1604 on the island of St. Croix. It was established by the Plymouth Company in 1607. Despite the harsh climate and conflict with the local population, the number of English settlements on the coast of the state increased. At the time of registration staff in the 18 th century, remained only a half of European settlement. Patriots and British troops held territory during the War of Independence and the Anglo-American War. Until 1820 belonged to the state of Massachusetts and, in consequence Missouri compromise became a free twenty-third state.
