The XK crouches slightly and shoots forward as if released from a bow. The experience is riveting and something very special, as one would expect from a supercharged Jaguar. XK Rs are modern classics, much sought after by drivers who like their creature comforts and truly sparkling performance as well. No one can challenge the race-bred credentials of this generation of Jaguar coupes and convertibles with their flowing lines. Even at rest, they look as if they are about to take off fast. Your first impression is one of nurturing comfort, for the front seats cocoon driver and passenger in decadent, but supportive, comfort, even on long drives. I drove the car with the top down on a chilly day by Santa Barbara standards, but the wind never bothered me and the body (the car`s, not mine) felt absolutely stiff with no rattles or squeaks, always a concern with convertibles. If the sun comes out or weather threatends, you lower and raise the top in seconds just by pressing a single button above the windscreen. I took off into thick traffic and just glided along with a gentle burble from behind that reminded me tactfully that I was driving a fast car. The acceleration is discreet with the supercharger idle, never intrusive, but there is plenty of controlled power if you need it. Even on the freeway onramp the acceleration was understated, until I had to make a rapid move to the fast lane in thick traffic. A quick dab on the throttle and I eased into a wide gap at the speed limit, ready to engage cruise control. The XK is comfortable on the freeway, quiet enough to enjoy the stereo with the top down, with all the relatively simple controls close to hand a good long distance car. But it`s off the freeway that the XK comes to life and is ready to play. You slip the gearshift to Sport mode and use the beautifully designed steering wheel paddles to shift through the six gears. Into second, choose your entry line, then push hard on the throttle and you are around safely in moments ready for the next hairpin. I had a wonderful time on my favorite twisties, cornering at speed, yet utterly safe with the magnificent brakes and precise steering. What makes this automobile so pleasant is that you can push it hard, really hard, or simply relax and take your time. Either way, the XK exudes a wonderful sense of poised control, which makes it possible for even inexperienced drivers to enjoy the car. On the way back to the lot, I swept at speed through a gently winding country road with never a touch of the brakes, just the gears to maintain a safe pace.
