If you look through our inventory, you'll see that we tend to like these Oldsmobile A-body ragtops, and this lovely green 1972 Cutlass is an outstanding example. With great performance from a 350 Olds V8, impressive fit and finish, and that creamy parchment interior, it's first-class muscle with an upscale personality. The cowl tag says this one was originally Baroque Gold, and given that even the name sounds stodgy and old, you'll probably agree that the current dark green metallic finish is a massive improvement. The impressive shine suggests that it was recently done and it looks fantastic on the Oldsmobile's curvaceous sheetmetal. The dark color seems to emphasize the long hood/short deck profile and the sweeping curve that extends from the headlights to the rear doors, then kicking up again to taper down to the rear bumper. Augmented by a contrasting parchment pinstripe, the car is at once elegant and muscular, especially if you recognize those subtle 442 badges on its flanks. The '72 Olds offered new trim, a finer grille, and blacked-out headlight bezels, so they're easy to recognize, even from behind where it wears six-element taillight lenses that were a one-year-only deal. The parchment interior is simply dazzling, so beautifully rich that it makes basic white look uncivilized. Anchored by black carpets and a matching center console, there's no doubt that Oldsmobile was aiming for a higher standard with the Cutlass. The seats are comfortable and supportive thanks to fresh foam underneath. The original instruments have been augmented by a tachometer neatly fitted into one of the original round pods, with the usual trio of auxiliary gauges just above the console. You'll also note factory A/C (although currently not connected) and a new AM/FM/CD stereo head unit in the dash. Overhead, there's a white power convertible top with a glass rear window, and the spotless trunk carries a full-sized spare, jack assembly, and amplifier for the stereo system. Alas, the 442 was reduced to a trim package in 1972, and the 350 was the standard engine. This Cutlass may only look the part of the 442, but that doesn't mean it's not a blast to drive, and with a distinctive Oldsmobile rumble, it still runs well enough to make you grin like you're 16 again. Under that chrome air cleaner, there's still Oldsmobile Gold paint on the block and the list of new equipment is extensive: brakes, master cylinder, power steering pump, fuel pump, thermostat, plugs and wires, and a bunch of other stuff to ensure this one runs as it should. A TH350 3-speed automatic shifts gears and drives a 10-bolt rear with fresh bearings and seals inside. Long-tube headers give it a nice, fat torque curve, so it feels like you'd expect vintage muscle to feel, and stock style mufflers give it a mellow tone. Of note, the exhaust uses polished tips in the rear bumper cut-outs, which were normally used only in big block cars, but it looks so butch, why wouldn't you upgrade? Color-matched Rally II wheels with trim rings wear fat 245/60/14 BFG radials. So when you outgrow your Camaro and want something a little more grown-up, this Cutlass 442 will fit the bill.
