We make so much out of matching-numbers and authenticity these days, but it kind of sucks the fun out of having a cool old car, dont you think? Take this 1969 Mustang for instance. Its got a cackling 351 under the hood, a great Mach 1 look, and a price tag thats a fraction of an otherwise identical car with slightly different numbers on the block. I think that makes it a screaming bargain, wouldnt you agree? If you said the 1969 Mustang sportsroof was the best-looking pony car of all time, you wouldnt get any argument from me. The proportions are perfect and they look fast just sitting still. Dressed in Mach 1 regalia, this slick fastback definitely looks like its ready to pound some Hondas into mush. The electric blue paint practically vibrates off the crisply rendered sheetmetal and looks fantastic from any angle. The clean, uncluttered looks are augmented by the scoops in the quarters and the requisite chin and deck lid spoilers that came with the Mach 1 package. Proper Mach 1 decals run along the lower edges of the body and visually lower the body, and a hood scoop is practically standard equipment on any car purporting to be a muscle car. Shiny chrome bumpers provide some welcome contrast and theres no mistaking the three-element taillights out back. This one is 100% Mustang. The Mustang really excelled with its interior, combining a racy feel with grand touring comfort in a way that has defied the decades. Handsome high-back bucket seats are firm and supportive for long drives, albeit a bit slippery with the factory-style shiny vinyl seating surfaces. New black carpets and matching door panels offer a very finished look, and as Ive said before, theres definitely some appeal to the butch no-console look in an early performance car like this. The deeply set instruments are still in excellent condition with clear lenses and bright markings and are easily visible through the factory rim-blow wheel. It offers an AM-FM-cassette stereo for entertainment as well as a surprisingly spacious trunk, so road trips are a blast with this Mustang as a travelling companion. With a rumbling 351W under the hood, this Mustang backs up its look with legitimate performance. Many enthusiasts prefer the agile handling of a small block car, and in this cars case, it gives up very little to its big block brothers. Detailed to look quite stock, the Ford Blue V8 sits well back in the engine bay for improved weight distribution and generates all the right eight cylinder sounds thanks to long-tube headers and a pair of Flowmasters. Backed by a C4 3-speed automatic transmission and bulletproof 9-inch rear, this car will remain an entertaining dance partner for years to come. The undercarriage isnt detailed for show but looks to be in good order with no issues, and the stance is perfected by those gorgeous 17-inch Cragar mags that are a modern take on an old favorite. Staggered 225-45-17 front and 275-40-17 rear tires fill the wheel wells without looking ridiculously modern on the vintage Pony. Nobodys going to check numbers when they see this Mach 1 pull into a show; theyre going to be looking at the guy with the massive grin on his face behind the wheel and wish they were him.
