One of the most beloved and best-selling models that ever rolled off the company’s assembly line in Abingdon, England was the MG Midget. And for most roadster enthusiasts, MG was the most creative for offering them in fun and affordable packages., , The simple yet classic design combination of a two-seat roadster with a small engine and a manual transmission was nothing more than a enthusiast dream. First launched in 1961, the original Midget was simply a rebadged (yet more expensive) version of the Austin-Healey Sprite. Power came from a 948 cc inline four rated at just 46HP. The cars were so basic that there weren’t even external door handles or locks. A second generation came in 1964 and saw the introduction of external door handles, roll up windows and locks and the power was increased to a whopping 75HP., , It was not until the 3rd generation that it received a larger engine using a 1500cc engine and to abide by US federal standards, some things had to be changed like the ride height and bumpers to make it safer. By the time production ended in 1979, a total of 73,899 Midgets were built., , The Midget offered here is a dry car, believed to have come from AZ just last year, receiving one re-spray some time ago that is showing signs of fading in spots. Also worth noting is the extensive mechanical rebuild less than a year and 50 miles ago by the world-renowned British car experts at University Motors in Kentwood, MI. , , The car starts, runs and drives very good. Has no smoke or oil leaks and would make someone an excellent driver.
